Ang Guryon ni Ildefonso Santos

Tanggapin mo anak, itong munting guryon
Na yari sa patpat at “papel de Hapon”
Magandang laruan pula, puti, asul
Na may panagalan mong sa gitna naroon.

Ang hiling ko lamang, bago paliparin,
Ang guryon mong ito ay pakatimbangin;
Ang solo’t paulo’y sukating magaling
Nang hindi mag-ikit o kaya’y magkiling.

Saka, pag umihip ang hangin, ilabas
At sa papawiri’y bayaang lumipad;
Datapwa’t ang pisi’y tibayan mo, anak,
At baka lagutin ng hanging malakas.

Ibigin ma’t hindi, balang araw, ikaw
Ay mapapabuyong makipagdagitan;

Matangay ng iba o kaya’y mapatid;
Kung saka-sakaling dina mapabalik
Maawaing kamay nawa ang magkamit!

Ang buhay ay guryon: marupok, malikot,
Dagiti’y dumagit saan man sumuot…
O, piliparinmo’t ihalik sa Diyos,
Bago patuluyang sa lupa:’y sumubsob!

    1. Hi Mary.
      Well, I really can’t give you a direct explanation of this poem but I can help you find your own way into finding its meaning.

      My professor in Literature taught me to remember three things to find in the poem to get me started in analyzing it.
      The first one is the speaker. Discover who the speaker in the poem is. It may be a man, woman, teacher, mother, dad, brother, lover or whoever. This will help you understand the next two things that you need to find in the poem.

      The second thing to understand in a poem is its poetic situation. It’s just a fancy term for saying, “What is actually happening in the poem?” Ask yourself. What is happening in Ildefonso Santos’ poem? What is the speaker talking about? Don’t think about the symbolism and figures of speech yet. Forget about it. Look at what is actually happening in the poem. Once you’ve understood what is happening and related it to the speaker, you can move on to the third thing.

      Purpose. Why do you think the speaker is talking like this? What do you think is the reason of the speaker to tell this poem? Does he want to teach some sort of lesson? Is he confessing something or giving out words of wisdom?

      When you have answered the three things, then you’re ready to take a deeper look at the poem. Always refer to these three things to keep your analysis consistent. I hope this helps. You can ask again if you find something you don’t understand. :)

      Have a good day!

      Alec

HOPE THAT THIS WILL HELP! ^O^
